StudMaster

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to explain the process of creating your own report in StudMaster and displaying animals selected on your own selection criteria in this own report.

StudMaster version

This document applies to version 4.0 and later versions of StudMaster.

Defining the columns of the report (Step 1)

This first step in creating an own report is to define the columns to display on your own report. This step is NOT where you define which animals should be displayed. The actions to choose columns for the report and animals to display in the report are two separate actions and should not be confused with the other.

1. Choose Function EB - Own report in StudMaster. A list of previously defined report would be displayed. A defined report will always be available until such time that you delete it from this list.

2. Press [Ins]ert to create a new report.

3. Type an own report code and description. It can be anything meaningful to you.

4. A "Fields to display" window would be displayed. This is where you list the columns you want on top of your own report.

To add columns to this list, press [+] to add columns to the end or [Ins]ert to insert columns.

5. A new window "Fields to choose from" would be displayed. Select a field to display on you report with the arrow keys and press Enter. The chosen column would be moved to the "Fields to display" window. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select all the columns you would like to see on your own report.

After selecting a column from the "Fields to choose from" window, you might not see the previously selected columns in the "Fields to display" window. Just use the up_arrow to display them.

Columns already selected in the "Fields to display" window can be deleted with the [-] or [Del]ete keys.

6. Press [Esc]ape to close the "Fields to display" window after selecting all the columns wanted on the own report. The newly created report would now be highlighted.

7. Choose the new report or any other previously defined report by highlighting it. Press Enter to select it.

You can always return to the defined columns of any report to chop and change by pressing [Alt_F]ields after highlighting it.

Selecting the animals to display in the own report (Step 2)

The second step in creating an own report is to now select the animals to display under the columns (own report) created in step 1. It should be clear at this point that the same own report created under step 1 can display different groups of animals. It is thus re-useable.

1. Choose from the menu which group of animals you would like to select. In this document we would focus on Function D - Selection group.

2. A list of previously created selection groups would be displayed.

3. Press [Ins]ert to create a new report.

4. Type a selection group code and description. It can be anything meaningful to you.

5. A "Selection Group Requirements" window would be displayed. This is where you specify the criteria to which an animal should comply to be listed or selected.

The best would be to explain by means of an example.

Lets say you want to select cows in the herd with at least two calves and an ICP (inter calving period) of less than 430 days. Ask yourself the question to which criteria an animal must comply to fall within this example.

I can identify three criteria: 1-Animal must be female (Sex = 1), 2-Two or more calves (Calves >= 2) and 3-ICP less than 430 (ICP < 430).

This 3 identified selection criteria must now be entered into the "Selection Group Requirements" window.

6. To add criteria to this list, press [+].

7. A list of "Fields to choose from" window would be displayed.

Sex selection

8. Choose "Sex" from the list and press [Enter]. "Sex" would be displayed under the "Field Name" column.

9. Choose "is equal to" from the list of Qualifiers. The choice would be displayed under the "Qualifier" column.

10. The "Variable" column is where you enter the value to what "Sex must be equal to". Since we are looking for females, type 1. Remember that female animals are identified with a "1" in the Sex field. Press [Enter].

11. Choose "and" from the list of "Operators". And means that you want to carry on specifying selection criteria. If this was the last selection criteria, you would have chosen "Finished".

Number of calves selection

12. Choose "No. of calves" from the list and press [Enter].

13. Choose "is greater or equal to" from the list of Qualifiers.

14. The "Variable" column is where you enter the value to what "No. of calves must be greater or equal to". Since we are looking for two or more calves, type 2. Press [Enter].

15. Choose "and" from the list of "Operators". And means that you want to carry on specifying selection criteria. If this was the last selection criteria, you would have chosen "Finished".

ICP selection

16. Choose "Ave calving interval" from the list and press [Enter].

17. Choose "is smaller than" from the list of Qualifiers.

18. The "Variable" column is where you enter the value to what "Ave calving interval must be smaller to". Since we are looking for ICP less than 430 days, type 430. Press [Enter].

19. Choose "Finished" from the list of "Operators" since this is the last of the three selections criterias.

End

20. A list of "Selection groups" would be displayed with the newly created selection group highlighted. Press [Enter] to choose to apply this selection group.

You can always return to the defined criteria of any selection group to chop and change by pressing [Alt_F]ields after highlighting the selection group.

21. Choose Function A - In herd animals to only select animals that are still alive and in the herd.

Your own report (own selected columns) with the animals which comply to your own selection criteria would be displayed.
